The Aurora has been in production for over 50 years. This classic contemporary design has been honored by the Museum of Modern Art, and many others. We offer a limited edition version, complimenting the legacy that the Aurora has accomplished, rightfully so.

The Aurora clock

What’s so special?

A very contemporary case, beautiful colors, and — a mystery! There are continuously changing colors and surprising color shifts as the secondhand disk overlaps the minute and hour hands. The clock continues to play tricks on the eye too. As you walk around watching the clock, you’ll notice the colors change depending on your viewing angle. Inside the clock, you’ll see a round secondhand, working as a window to view more colors as it as it rotates. It turns out, the color changes have to do with polarized light and a phenomenon called bi-refractance. Vectors of light are being rotated as they pass through each material, very different from just color filtering.

The uniquely sculptured case is highly polished aluminum, cut out on a lathe and hand polished the same way they were in the 1970s. Additionally, the strong, metal-geared motor still comes from the same reliable company as it did originally. All paired together with the new LED lamp technology for cooler running, as well as a broader spectrum of more vibrant colors, you get the best in contemporary design — a worthy continuation of the AURORA.

  • Other Updates/Additions:

Rear Covers: Unfortunately our source for rear covers has been gone a long time. In the U.S. its very hard to find a manufacture that will mill steel and small round pieces without wanting an order minimum of 25,000. We do not have an inventory of 25,000 clocks. We do have scratched rear covers that will come with every new purchase. Some are more scratched than others. The rear covers job is in the back of the clock, hidden from eyesight to keep the light of the LEDs from leaking out. We understand that the cosmetic damage is not appealing but there isn’t another choice unless you choose to opt out from receiving one. We hope you understand. Maybe soon we will come across another source to fill our inventory needs.

Brightness Adjustment: There is now a brightness adjustment setting that has been added to clocks made after August 2003. This switch on the LED board allows an adjustment of the brightness to dim the clock in the bedroom or brighten for the office.

The variable spectrum LED lighting source: An updated, new light source that has a microprocessor slowly changing the brightness of red, blue, green and white light emitting diodes (LEDs). So red does not dominate yellow, the microprocessor occasionally, slowly, turns off the red LEDs. Similarly, the blue is occasionally turned off so you can see the green colors. A great improvement because the LEDs run much cooler which allows the motor and filters a longer life. Plus the LEDs have a 20+ year life (they do not burn out, but rather just get dimmer). Last, the LEDs produce both more saturated colors and more pastels. This totals up to the best in contemporary design and engineering. Enjoy the Aurora for a lifetime and then pass it down to your descendants.

Color description: The microprocessor controlling the LEDs now has a new color cycle.  First it spends about 45 seconds in colors similar to the original Aurora, then it cycles to:
Deep Blue and Toasted Red colors
Sunset Orange and Hot Pink colors
Sea foam Green and Aqua colors
Yellows will then start over, but the colors will be slightly different because the second hand disk will have shifted by 90 degrees.
